Vera Mae (Berry) Pigee was born in 1924 near Glendora, Mississippi. After studying cosmetology at an integrated beauty school in Chicago, she returned to Mississippi to manage Pigee’s Beauty Salon in Clarksdale. There she also worked as a civil rights activist, serving as secretary of the local NAACP branch and leading the Youth Council. Pigee ran voter registration drives in the 1960s. Her memoir, The Struggle of Struggles, was published in Detroit. She presented this two-volume set to the Reuther Library in 1987.
